Personalities and emotions clash violently when two men from different backgrounds meet in the Far East and ambition dominates sullen adversity until humbled in a court of law. Relationships do not improve when the men discover they share the same woman. Reduced to an elemental struggle one prospers materially while the other succeeds in love, or does he?

Fortune's Bastard is based around a Naval aircraft carrier, the HMS Victorious, a Eurasian woman of ill repute, Michiko, LeVoir, the ship's commander, and Chief Petty Officer Palmer newly assigned to the ship in Singapore. The author introduces us to life aboard a carrier by describing the accommodations and duties of both the upper and lower ranks on deck. The writing is very descriptive and the action is not fast paced, but it is full of surprising twists and turns.Le Voir and Palmer have a personality conflict from the beginning, made worse by the fact that they share the attentions of one particular woman. Palmer is sure that his easy going personality will allow him to work amicably with Le Voir, but he is surprised to find out that the man is a snake hated by practically the entire crew. Palmer has to fight for his freedom when he finds himself levied with enough charges to guarantee at least 20 years in prison. He has a choice to make and that choice leads to desertion and marriage to the woman he loves. It seems that even though Le Voir was the bad guy in the story, he still gets all the glory and a promotion. At the end I wanted to know what happened to Palmer and his new bride. We may never know, or perhaps a sequel could be in the making.
This is my first go at this genre and I had trouble getting into the storyline and understanding the rank structure of the Navy. For those who fancy slower action, plenty of emotions and lots of things to wonder about, this is the book for you. Readers who want action from page one and fewer descriptive passages; this one is not for you.
